Ten days have gone by since the murder of Buet student Fardin Noor Parash, but law enforcement is yet to determine a motive.

The Detective Branch of Police, which has been tasked with the murder investigation, yesterday said they had no new information to share.

Although the Rapid Action Battalion claimed that drug gang members were involved in the murder, the motive remains unknown.

To further convolute matters, detectives and Rab have given contradictory statements regarding the place of death.

While DB said that they were yet to determine where Fardin was murdered, Rab said he was killed around Chonpara slum in Narayanganj.

The investigators also said they did not find any involvement of Fardin's friend Amatullah Bushra in his murder, who is the only arrestee and the prime accused in the FIR filed by the victim's father Kazi Nuruddin.

On November 7, the decomposing body of Fardin, a third-year student in Buet's civil engineering department, was recovered from the Sitalakkhya river in Narayanganj's Siddhirganj, three days after he went missing.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Rajib Al Masud, deputy commissioner (Motijheel division) of DB, said, "There are no new developments in the Fardin murder case."

"Moreover, we did not find Bushra's involvement in the case as of yet," he added.

Meanwhile, Khandaker Al Moin, director of Rab's legal and media wing, said they found involvement of Chonpara slum's drug dealer Raihan Mahmud and his gang. "The murder motive will become clear once Raihan and his associates are arrested."

However, family members of Raihan, an associate of the slain City Shaheen, alleged that he was picked up by law enforcement in Barisal on Saturday.

His wife Dalia Begum claimed two of Raihan's associates, Uzzal and Roni, were also apprehended along with him.

She said that law enforcement officers alleged that her husband killed the Buet student. "But my husband is not involved in the murder. He was home asleep when it happened."
