Derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu: Ex-GCC mayor Jahangir gets bail

The High Court today (September 5, 2022) granted eight weeks of anticipatory bail to former Gazipur City Corporation mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam in a case filed in Faridpur on the charge of making derogatory remarks on Father of the Nation and the Liberation War.
A Faridpur court on August 31 issued an arrest warrant against Jahangir in the case.
The HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Hasan and Justice Md Atabullah granted the bail after hearing a petition Jahangir filed seeking anticipatory bail in the case.
At the time, the HC bench also asked Jahangir Alam to surrender before the lower court concerned in eight weeks in connection with the case.
Jahangir's lawyer MK Rahman told The Daily Star that an organisation named Manobik Bangladesh filed the case against his client to harass him.
Similar cases were filed against him in Noagaon, Rajbari and a few other districts in which he was granted bail, he added.
In September last year, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and some martyred freedom fighters at a programme went viral on social media.
Later, on November 19, the ruling Awami League expelled him over the comments.
Deputy Attorney General Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan represented the state during the hearing today.
