DU student dies with injury marks at in-laws' in Banani
A female student of Dhaka University was found dead in her in-law's house at Dhaka's Banani area last evening.
Her family members alleged that Elma Chowdhury Meghla, 26, was killed by her in-laws as there were numerous bruises on her body.
The in-laws took Elma to United Hospital where doctors declared her dead. On information, police rushed there and recovered the body from the hospital, said Alamgir Gazi, inspector (investigation) of Banani Police Station.
Elma, a final year student of the department of dance, married Canada expat Iftekhar Abedin six months ago and used to live in her husband's Banani residence.
Iftekhar came to Dhaka from Canada some days ago, police and family members said.
Iftekhar was taken into police custody for interrogation, he said adding there are marks of old and fresh injuries on her body.
Elma's uncle Iqbal Hossain said, "My niece was tortured to death by her husband and his family members. We saw visible parts of her body and there are numerous torture marks."
"She cannot commit suicide," he added.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Her teachers and classmates rushed to DMCH hearing the news of her death. The students demanded neutral investigation and justice for their friend.
Jannatul Ferdous, a classmate of the victim, said they could not communicate with her since Elma got married.
"We found her phone switched off or her in-law's used to receive the calls whenever we called her," she said, adding Elma last came to the university campus to attend an exam in September.
Tamanna Rahman, a teacher of the victim, said a man accompanied the student when she came to the department to attend the exam.
He, like a bodyguard, was watching her the whole time, she said.
