DSA case against ex-SP Babul: Court to decide on charges on June 8
A Dhaka tribunal today fixed June 8 to decide on whether it will accept the charges against sacked superintendent of police Babul Akhter, his father, brother and a journalist in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Banaj Kumar Majumder, chief of Police Bureau of Investigation, filed the case in September last year accusing them of spreading false information about the murder of Babul's wife Babul's wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
Babul is in jail but his father Abdul Wadud Mia and brother Habibur Rahman Labu are on bail, while journalist Elias Hossain is abroad.
Judge AM Julfiker Hayet of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal set the date after scrutinising the case docket and other relevant documents.
The charge sheet mentioned that Elias is absconding. An appeal was filed for issuing an arrest warrant against him.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was shot dead while she was walking her son to his school bus at Chattogram's GEC intersection.
Babul then filed a case accusing three unidentified men.
Later, PBI took over the investigation of the case from the Detective Branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
On May 11 last year, PBI called Babul to its office for interrogation.
Officers later said PBI took him into custody after he failed to give satisfactory answers to certain questions.
The following day, Mitu's father filed a murder case accusing Babul of planning the murder over an affair. Seven others were also accused in the case.
