Derogatory remark on PM: SC chamber judge stays Mohila Dal leader Sonia’s bail
The Supreme Court chamber judge today (November 2, 2022) stayed till next Monday (November 7, 2022) a High Court order that granted bail to Sonia Akhter Smriti, founder president of Rajbari Blood Donors and a member of the district Mohila Dal, in a case filed for making derogatory remark on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order following a petition filed by the state seeking stay on the HC order.
Justice M Enayetur Rahim also sent the state's petition to the full bench of the Appellate Division for its hearing.
Following a bail petition filed by Sonia, the HC on October 31 granted ad-interim bail to her in the case.
Additional Attorney General SK Md Morshed appeared for the state while senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali argued for Sonia during hearing the petition today.
On October 5, a local Awami League leader, Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury, lodged a written complaint with Rajbari Sadar Police Station against Sonia for her derogatory about the prime minister. The complaint was later recorded as a case.
Police arrested Sonia the same day in connection with the case.
According to the complaint, Sonia had posted the status on Facebook about a month ago.
