Death-row war criminal arrested

Rab arrested a death-row war criminal in Mymensingh city on Sunday night.

Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team raided the rented house of Sultan Mahmud Fakir, 70, in Bhatikashor area and arrested him.

On January 23, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced six war criminals, including Sultan, to death for killing Yunus Ali, a freedom fighter of Kakchar village in Trishal upazila of the district, on August 15, 1971, said Mohibul Islam Khan, commanding officer of Rab-14 and additional deputy inspector general of Mymensingh police, at a press conference yesterday afternoon.

In 2015, the victim's son Ruhul Amin filed a case with a Mymensingh court in this regard. The case was later transferred to the tribunal.

Holding the six guilty of kidnapping, torturing, and murdering Yunus Ali, Justice Shahinur Islam of the tribunal delivered the verdict.

Of the convicts, Sultan was handed over to the tribunal, while the others have been absconding since the filing of the case.
