Death-row convict arrested in Gaibandha MP Liton murder

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a death-row convict in the killing of former Awami League lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton last night (September 11, 2022).
The arrestee is Chandan Kumar Roy, the lone fugitive in the case, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of Legal and Media Wing of Rab.
Two teams of Rab in a drive arrested Chandan around 9:30pm yesterday in the Bhomra area of Satkhira.
Seven accused were sentenced to death in the murder case of Liton on November 28, 2019, including former local Jatiya Party MP Col (retd) Abdul Kader Khan, prime accused in the case.
Of the seven convicts, Chandan Kumar Roy fled to India soon after the murder nearly three years ago, said police.
In the evening of December 31, 2016, two assailants entered Liton's house in Masterpara of Sundarganj upazila and shot him and fled the scene.
Liton died of his bullet wounds at Rangpur Medical College Hospital that night.
Manzurul's younger sister Fahmida Bulbul Kakoli filed the murder case with Sundarganj Police Station the next day.
A Gaibandha court on February 7, 2018, framed charges against eight people, including former Jatiya Party lawmaker Abdul Kader and AJM Shamsuzzoha.
Police submitted the charge sheet of the murder case against the eight -- Col (Rtd) Abdul Kader Khan, his personal secretary Shamsuzzoha Sarker and Anowarul Islam alias Rana, Shaheen Mia Santo, Rashedul Hasan Mehdi, Chandon Kumar Roy, Subol Kumar Roy and Abdul Hannan -- on April 30, 2017.
Of the accused, seven were arrested by the law enforcers while Chandan, chief associate of Col (retd) Kader, went into hiding.
After the charge sheet submission, Subol died in jail due to illness.
All the seven accused confessed to their involvement in the murder before magistrates under Section 164. In the charge sheet, it was mentioned that Kader had been planning to kill Liton since 2014.
