DB busts robbery gang targeting expats outside Dhaka airport
Detectives arrested three members of a robbery gang, which targets and robs expatriate Bangladeshis outside the Dhaka airport following their arrival in the country.
A team of detectives arrested them from Hatirjheel area last night, AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (detectives) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told a press briefing today.
The arrestees are Masudul Haque alias Apel, Amir Hossain Hawlader and Md Shamim.
Liton Sarker, who arrived in the country on September 7 from Egypt after five years, is one of the victims of the gang, he said.
When he was waiting for his car at the airport roundabout, five to six gang members intercepted him, took his luggage, handbag, gold ornaments and Tk 40,000 cash at knifepoint, the DB official said.
DB officials said more than 50 expats have been targets of such robberies and of them only seven have filed cases.
The victims are unwilling to file cases as they have to go abroad and want to avoid all kinds of legal hassle.
Hafiz Akhter said the gang members target expats waiting alone outside the airport.
Sometimes they rob them at knifepoint and sometimes they form a liaison with their target before sedating and robbing them.
