A Dhaka court today stayed a family court verdict granting Japanese citizen Eriko Nakano custody of her two children.

Judge AHM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan of Dhaka's District and Sessions Judge's Court passed the order after hearing an appeal filed on February 2 by Eriko's husband Imran Sharif, a Bangladesh-born US citizen, challenging the trial court verdict.

After passing the order, the judge directed the trial court to send the case file to Dhaka's District and Sessions Judge's Court, which will set a date later in the day for final hearing on the issue.

The judge also asked both parties to settle the issue out of court.

Japanese mother gets custody of daughters

On January 29, Judge Durdana Rahman of Dhaka's Second Assistant Judge and Family Court gave the custody of the children -- Nakano Jasmine Malika, 11, and Nakano Laila Lina, 9 -- to their mother Eriko Nakano.

The court also dismissed the case filed by Sharif on February 28, 2022, seeking custody of the children.
