Court issues travel ban on 5 NSU trustees
A Dhaka court today (May 24, 2022) issued a travel ban on six people, including North South University (NSU) Board of Trustees Chairperson Azim Uddin Ahmed, in a Tk 304 crore money laundering case.
Five others are members of NSU Board of Trustees MA Kashem, Benajir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Mohammed Shajahan and Ashaloy Housing and Developers Managing Director Amin Md Hilaly.
Of them, MA Kashem, Benajir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Mohammed Shajahan were earlier arrested and they are now in jail custody.
Judge KM EmrulKayesh of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order after ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted an application, seeking travel ban on them.
In the petition, the IO said following the case, there is a chance that, Azim and Amin Md Hilaly, now on the run, might leave the country to avoid arrest while four others, now in jail custody, also might leave the country after getting bail, the IO said.
After the hearing, the judge directed the Anti-Corruption Commission to send the order sheet to the Chief of the Special Branch (Immigration) to take further steps in this regard.
The same court on Monday (May 23, 2022) allowed the ACC to interrogate four members of North South University's (NSU) board of trustees, now in jail, at the jail gate for a day, in connection with the case.
Earlier on Sunday, the four were arrested after the High Court rejected their anticipatory bail petitions in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on May 5.
