Corruption allegations: ACC asks Zahangir to appear before it

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has asked sacked mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Zahangir Alam to appear before it to be quizzed about corruption allegations against him.
He was asked to be present at the ACC's Segunbagicha headquarters at 10:00am on May 21 and 22, reads the letter signed by ACC's Deputy Director Ali Akbar.
There are allegations against Zahangir of misappropriating huge sums of money from different development projects.
Last year, the ACC formed a two-member committee to investigate the corruption allegations.
The commission will assume that Zahangir has nothing to say regarding the allegations if Zahangir fails to appear before the ACC on the day, said the ACC letter sent to Zahangir.
Awami League on Monday permanently expelled Zahangir from the party after he began campaigning for his mother in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election, which she is contesting as an independent.
Following a leaked clip where Zahangir made derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and expressed doubts about the number of martyrs in the Liberation War, ruling Awami League's central working committee expelled Jahangir in 2021. He, however, got general amnesty in January this year.
He sought the party's nomination again for the mayoral post in the upcoming GCC election but the party chose Gazipur city Awami League President Azmat Ullah.
Although Zahangir tried to contest the polls as an independent candidate, his nomination paper was rejected during sorting. His mother Zayeda Khatun's nomination paper was found to be legal.
