Circulating Nusrat’s video: HC refuses ex-OC Moazzem's bail
The High Court today refused to grant bail to Moazzem Hossain, former officer-in-charge of Noakhali's Sonagazi Police Station, who was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for filming Nusrat Jahan Rafi's statement and circulating the clip without her consent.
The HC bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan also dropped the bail petition of Moazzem Hossain from its cause list considering the gravity of his offence, Deputy Attorney General Md Rezaul Karim told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, Moazzem's lawyer Murad Reza said his client can seek bail from another HC bench in the case.
Additional Attorney General Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury represented the state during hearing of the bail petition.
A Dhaka court on November 28, 2019 sentenced Moazzem Hossain to eight years' rigorous imprisonment for the offence.
Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Feni, was set on fire on April 6, 2019 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a sexual assault case filed against the madrasa's principal Siraj Ud Doula.
After fighting for her life for five days, she died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10 the same year.
The same day, Moazzem was withdrawn from his OC post, as Nusrat's family alleged that he was not cooperating with them. Moazzem was suspended on May 8 for his negligence in duty over Nusrat murder.
A video clip of the then Sonagazi OC asking Nusrat humiliating questions went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism.
Police arrested Moazzem from near the High Court area on June 16 in 2019 when he went there seeking anticipatory bail in the case.
A Feni court on October 24 the same year sentenced all the sixteen accused, including Siraj Ud Doula to death for killing Nusrat.
