Chinese man gets bail in rape case after 20 days

A Chinese national has secured bail from a Dhaka court 20 days after he landed in jail in a case filed over the rape of an 11th-grader in August.
Judge (in-charge) Mohammad Morshed Alam of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court-8 of Dhaka on September 18 granted bail to Ji Chen, 58.
In the order, the judge said the victim was an adult. Moreover, she submitted an affidavit before the court, saying she had no objection if the accused got bail.
On August 27, the victim filed the case with Uttara Paschim Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, accusing Chen and his local female accomplice, Hira Chakma.
The next day, the two were sent to jail after police arrested them in Uttara.
On August 29, a Dhaka court rejected his bail petition.
In the police forwarding report, investigation officer Nurul Haque, also a sub-inspector of Uttara Paschim Police Station, had said if Ji Chen gets bail, he might go back to his country.
So, the court needs to keep the accused in jail custody until the investigation into the case is completed.
According to case documents, Hira promised to send the victim to China and took her to Ji Chen's house in Uttara's Sector-14 on August 25 night. Chen on August 26 raped the victim.
