Charges framed against 40 BNP leaders, activists for assaulting police in 2018
A Dhaka court today framed charges against 40 BNP leaders and activists, including its Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel and Jubo Dal General Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, in a case filed over assaulting policemen in April 2018.
The accused, now on bail, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain read out the charges to them.
Earlier in the day, the magistrate dismissed separate petitions submitted for discharging them from the charges of the case.
The court fixed June 23 for starting trial of the case.
According to the prosecution, a group of BNP leaders and activists brought out a rally in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) -- demanding the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at around 11:50am on April 7, 2018.
At one stage, they attacked the on-duty policemen and prevented them from discharging their duties that injured five of them.
Later, Sub-inspector Ripon Kumar Biswas filed a case against 24 BNP leaders and activists with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
After an investigation, SI Rohidul Islam of the same police station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against Sohel, Tuku and 38 others.
Thirty-two people have been made prosecution witnesses in the charge sheet.
