UP chairman’s house attacked in Pabna; highway blocked for 4 hours
Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Pabna highway was disrupted for four hours today after locals put barricade at Kashinathpur intersection, protesting an attack on the house of a UP chairman in Pabna's Bera upazila.
Chairman of Puran Varenga union parishad, Md Rafikullah, also a freedom fighter, said unidentified criminals attacked his house at Roghunathpur village around 3:30am.
They threw several crude bombs and also opened fired but none was hurt, the chairman claimed.
Hearing the news, locals put barricade on the highway, disrupting traffic movement from 8am to 12pm. They also demonstrated in Nagarbari and Kashinathpur areas, reports our Pabna correspondent.
The UP chairman blamed followers of former lawmaker Azizul Haque Arzu for the attack.
"Arzu's followers might have led the attack as I have protested construction of his market on a government land. I also filed a GD against Arzu and complained against him with Pabna district Awami League," Md Rafikullah said.
Talking to The Daily Star, Md Rawshan Ali, officer in charge of Aminpur Police Station, said police recovered three bullets and six crude bombs from the house.
A bomb disposal unit has been called, the OC said, adding that police are investigating the incident.
This correspondent called Arzu several times for his comment but he could not be reached.
Arzu yesterday told this correspondent that Rafikullah brought harassment allegation against him. "This is nothing but a conspiracy," he said.
He said he would not work for Rafikullah in the upcoming UP election so the UP chairman was making ploys to harass him.
