BFIU seeks bank account details of Pori, 5 others
Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has asked banks to submit details of accounts of five people, including actor Pori Moni and businessperson-turned-politician Helena Jahangir, who have recently been arrested on various grounds.
The three others are film producer Nazrul Islam Raz and models Faria Mahbub Piyasha and Moriom Akter Mou.
The BFIU has also asked banks to provide details of accounts of journalist Rozina Islam.
The BFIU, the intelligence agency of the country's financial sector, issued four letters to banks on Tuesday, asking them to submit the information within five working days.
Seeking anonymity, a BFIU official said the agency had taken the initiative to check whether the five were involved in any money laundering activities.
The official declined to give details.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been tasked with investigating six more cases filed against Pori Moni, the two models and their associates.
The cases were filed with Banani, Bhatara, Gulshan and Khilkhet police stations under Narcotics Control Act, Pornography Control Act, Arms Act, Special Powers Act and Digital Security Act, CID Additional Superintendent of Police Azad Rahman told this newspaper.
So far, 15 cases have been filed. Of those, the CID is probing 14 cases against Pori Moni, her associate Ashraful Islam Dipu, models Faria Mahbub Piyasha and Moriom Akter Mou, their associates Mishu Hasan and Masudul Hasan Jisan, film producer Nazrul Islam Raz, his associate Sabuj and sacked Awami League leader Helena Jahangir.
ROZINA'S BANK INFO SOUGHT
Banks were asked to provide statements of deposits and transactions made through the accounts of Rozina, senior reporter of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, within five working days.
The directive was issued on Tuesday following a request from a state agency, BFIU officials said.
On May 17 this year, Rozina went to the health ministry at the Secretariat to perform her professional duties.
She was confined to a room at the ministry for nearly six hours, and then taken to Shahbagh Police Station. She was in police custody for nearly 11 hours.
Later, Rozina was shown arrested in a case filed against her under the Official Secrets Act and the Penal Code, which drew widespread protest and criticism.
On May 23, she was released from jail after a Dhaka court granted her interim bail.
