In case filed by himself, pharmacist admits to smuggling medicines out of jail
An assistant pharmacist of Lalmonirhat District Jail has admitted to smuggling government drugs out of the prison and selling those outside.
He made the admission in the statement of a case he himself lodged with Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station last night.
Badiuzzaman, 53, sued one Gautam Chandra Roy and five unidentified people who used to blackmail him by posing as officials of Detective Branch.
He used to sell those drugs through Gautam, who is a motorcycle mechanic. On March 14, five unidentified persons went to Badiuzzaman's house to buy the smuggled medicines in presence of Gautam.
At one point, the buyers claiming to be DB officials threatened to arrest him. The gang then forced him to pay Tk 28,000 in cash and write a cheque of Tk one lakh. They also looted the drugs before leaving, according to the case statement.
The gang kept contacting Badiuzzaman and blackmailing him for money.
Police have arrested Gautam, 28, and Saikat Imran, 25, in the case, said Ershadul Alam, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.
"Prison authorities will look into the matter of smuggling government drugs from prisons and selling them outside," he added.
Jailer of Lalmonirhat District Jail Shafiqul Alam and Superintendent Omar Farooq, however, said they were not aware of the case.
"Departmental action will be taken against Badiuzzaman if he confessed to drug smuggling," Omar Farooq said, adding, "I will collect a copy of the case statement and send it to the higher authorities."
Talking to The Daily Star, Badiuzzaman said, "I was greedy and used to smuggle govt medicines from the prison and sell them outside.
He added, "The gang blackmailed me through Gautam. I filed the case but did not inform the jail authorities about it."
