Bus driver gets 9 years jail in-absentia for killing 2 secretaries
A Manikganj court today (May 24, 2022) sentenced the driver of a bus to nine years imprisonment for killing two secretaries on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in 2010.
The convict is Anwar Hossain, hailing from Nobabganj in Dhaka, reports our Manikganj correspondent quoting court sources.
Manikganj Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Utpal Bhattacharya pronounced the verdict where Anwar was tried in-absentia.
The judge also fined him Tk 2 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve five more months in jail.
According to court sources, Rajia Begum secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children and Siddiqur Rahman, additional secretary of the Ministry of Industries were going to an official tour to Tungipara in Gopalganj on July 31, 2010 when a bus of Druti Paribahan ran over them at Shivalaya's Utholoy intersection area on Dhaka-Aricha Highway -- leaving four including the two secretaries seriously injured.
Locals rescued them and sent them to Manikganj Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctor declared the duo dead.
Shamsul Haque, additional director general of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation filed a case with Shivalaya Police Station in this regard.
Following the case, police arrested the bus driver.
After getting bail from the court, the driver went into hiding.
On August 19, 2010, Sub-Inspector Nurul Islam Bhuiyan, investigation officer of the case submitted charge-sheet to the court against the driver.
A total of 10 witnesses gave testimonies in the case.
