Buet student Abrar murder case: Accused taken to court

The 22 accused in Buet student Abrar Fahad murder case have been taken to court this morning as a Dhaka tribunal is set to deliver the verdict in the case today.

Of the 25 accused in the case, Mustaba, Jishan and Tanim have been absconding, while the rest have been behind bars.

The 22 accused were taken to the court premises around 9:30am and later kept in court prison, Court Inspector and in-charge of the court prison Md Abdul Hakim, told The Daily Star.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka is likely to announce the verdict around 12pm, Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan, a lawyer of the tribunal, told The Daily Star.

On November 14, the Dhaka tribunal set November 28 for delivering the judgment in Buet student Abrar Fahad murder case filed in October 2019.

Earlier the tribunal recorded statements of 46 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.

Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), died after he was brutally beaten allegedly by some Chhatra League activists at Sher-e-Bangla hall of the university in the early hours of October 7, 2019.

Later, his father filed the case with Chawkbazar Police Station against 19 Buet BCL leaders.

During the investigation, eight of the accused gave confessional statements to magistrates on different dates.

Inspector Md Wahiduzaman of Detective Branch of police submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka against 25 Buet students on November 13, 2019.

On September 15 last year, the tribunal framed charges against the accused.
