Body found in trunk: PBI arrests accused after 6 years
Members of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) have identified a woman killed six years back and also arrested the accused from Cumilla yesterday.
The accused, Rezaul Karim Swapan, a retired official of Bangladesh Navy, was nabbed from the EPZ area yesterday, Banaj Kumar Majumder, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police and chief of PBI, said during a press briefing today.
Rezaul killed the victim, identified as Shampa Begum, on the night of May 2, 2015 at their rented house in Chattogram's Pahartoli area where they were living posing as a married couple, PBI found in their investigation.
The next morning, the accused put the body in a steel trunk.
He then bought a ticket of Dhaka-bound bus of Eagle Paribahan and put the trunk inside the luggage box of the vehicle around 8:00am.
He told the bus conductor that the passenger of the ticket would board from the next stop. He also called the parents of the victim in Khulna and lied to them that he saw Shampa off on a Khulna-bound bus.
When the Eagle Paribahan bus reached Dhaka's Gabtoli around 5:45pm the same day, the conductor noticed the suspicious unclaimed and heavy trunk. They informed the matter to Darus Salam police.
Police rushed to the spot, opened the luggage and found a body. Later, it was buried unclaimed, said the PBI official.
Darus Salam police investigated three months to identify the victim and the culprit of the case filed with Darus Salam Police Station.
Later, Criminal Investigation Department conducted investigation for four years but could not identify the victim.
CID submitted the final report of its probe to a Dhaka court but the court refused to accept it and transferred the case to PBI, Banaj Kumar Majumdar said.
PBI during investigation, discovered a general diary filed by Abdul Mannan, brother-in-law of a missing woman – Shampa -- on June 10, 2015 with Pahartoli Police Station.
Upon contacting with the missing women's family, PBI came to know that the victim's father, also a retired army officer Ilias Sheikh, filed a complaint against son-in-law Rezaul Karim with Navy's Chattogram office on March 27, 2015.
Navy sent him on forced retirement in 2019 after finding his involvement with various crimes.
After his arrest yesterday, Rezaul Karim confessed to killing Shampa before a magistrate.
