Begumganj gang rape, torture: HC asks to suspend OC, 4 others for negligence
The High Court today observed that the negligence of local police administration and a union member in taking steps on time resulted in the gang rape and torture in Noakhali's Begumganj in September last year.
The incident happened at Joykrishnapur village of Eklashpur union in Begumganj upazila on September 2 that year. The video footage went viral on social media in the first week of October the same year.
Today, the HC said it is evident from the documents that the victim had informed the local police and union parishad member concerned of her apprehension of being tortured.
But they did not take any action to save her, the HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah said while delivering verdict on a suo moto (voluntary) rule on the issue.
The bench also said the civil society members should come forward and to play a role so that such incidents don't occur in future.
With this observation, the HC directed the authorities concerned of the government to suspend the then officer-in-charge of Begumganj Police Station Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, then sub-inspector Habibur Rahman, assistant sub-inspector Mafizul Islam, village police Ali Asgar and union parishad member Moazzem Hossain Sohagh.
The court also directed the authorities to take appropriate departmental action against them for their negligence
