BCL members assault college teacher in Ctg

attack on whip Shamsul’s polls campaign

Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League assaulted a female teacher of Omargani MES College in Chattogram yesterday for not allowing them to enter her classroom with a procession.

Witnesses said Boby Barua was taking a class on economics for the HSC first-year students around noon. At one point, some 12 to 15 BCL activists in a procession tried to enter the classroom without permission.

As the teacher asked them to wait outside until the class ended, the BCL men had an altercation with the teacher and assaulted her physically.

Speaking to The Daily Star last night, Boby said, "They harassed me because I didn't allow them to enter the classroom without permission. I informed Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury about the incident over phone. I have also informed the college authorities of the matter."

She said the BCL men physically harassed her in front of over 100 students. One of the assaulters was an outsider, she added.

"Following the assault, I am now suffering from depression."

Santosh Kumar Chakma, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station, said police on information went to the college and brought the situation under control. "If we receive a written complaint, we will take legal action in this regard," he added.

Witnesses and some teachers said the accused BCL activists are followers of Arshedul Alam Bachchu, former general secretary of Omargani MES College Students' Union.

This newspaper tried to reach Arshedul for comments but he didn't respond to calls.
