AL leader murdered in Bogura
Criminals killed a union-level Awami League leader in Bogura Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.
Mominur Islam Rocky, 32, was the general secretary of Fapor union AL unit.
Quoting his family, Selim Reza, officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, said Rocky was returning home after offering Esha prayers at a mosque. When he reached Haatkhola Bazar, near his home, some 15-20 youths attacked him with sharp weapons and rods around 8:30pm.
They hit him on his head with iron rods and stabbed him. They fled the spot, leaving him critically injured.
Locals sent him to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The attackers were mostly aged between 17 and 19, said the OC.
Foysal Mamhmud, additional superintendent of police (Bogura Sadar circle), told The Daily Star that Rocky was killed following a feud with his assistant Gausul, 25. As a local AL leader, Rocky used to settle many issues through village arbitration.
Recently, Rocky took the responsibility to collect Tk 8 lakh loan a man was not repaying. Rocky was supposed to get a cut, sources said.
Rocky gave the job of collecting the money to Gausul who allegedly did not give Rocky his cut, which led to a feud, said the police officer.
"We have identified eight to 10 attackers involved in the murder and are trying to arrest them."
Rocky was accused in five cases, including murder, drug and arms, filed with Sadar Police Station, the police officer added.
Abu Sufian Shafiq, Bogura Sadar upazila parishad chairman and president of Bogura Sadar upazila unit AL, told this paper that Rocky was the general secretary of Fapor union.
Some drug dealers of the area killed him over a previous enmity, he said.
This paper could not reach Gausul for his comments.
