Acid attack: RMG worker dies after 12-day fight for life

Fighting for her life for 12 days, an RMG worker died from acid attack -- allegedly by her former husband in Manikganj's Saturia upazila -- early today.

Sathi Akhter (19) succumbed to her injuries at Sheikh Hasina Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka around 12am today, our Manikganj correspondent reports quoting Officer-in-Charge of Saturia Police Station Muhammad Ashraful Alam.

According to the statement of the case filed over the incident, Sathi, a resident of Dhankora Ferajipara area, got married to Naeem Mollik of Betila village in Manikganj Sadar upazila around one and a half years back.

Naeem used to abuse Sathi for dowry. After they got divorced four months back, Sathi joined a readymade garment factory in Dhaka's Dhamrai. But Naeem started stalking her.

Naeem allegedly threw acid on Sathi through a window when she was sleeping with her mother and sister on January 28. Her face, including the trachea, and two hands were burnt in the attack.

Sathi was first admitted to the 150-bed General Hospital in Manikganj. Later, she was shifted to Dhaka after her condition deteriorated.

After a case was filed in this regard, Naeem was arrested four days into the incident, the OC said.
