Accused on remand dies in Uttara East Police Station
An accused in a drug case died in custody of Uttara East Police Station early today.
Deceased Liton (40) was on a two-day remand in a case filed by Rapid Action Battalion under the Narcotics Control Act.
Saiful Islam, deputy commissioner of Uttara Division Police, said that Liton was a drug addict and hanged himself with part of his blanket in the lock-up.
"There is a CCTV camera in the lock-up. We formed a three-member committee led by an additional deputy commissioner to investigate the incident," the deputy commissioner said.
An executive magistrate will prepare an inquest on the body, the police official said.
The body was sent to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi.
A medical officer of the hospital said the man was brought dead.
Hailing from Bogura's Kahalu upazila, Liton was accused in at least four cases, police said.
Liton's son Wahedul Islam said his father was a truck driver and was living in Narayaganj for the last couple of months. The owner of the truck informed them a couple of days ago that his father was arrested.
"Two days ago, a man claiming to be a lawyer called us and said my father would not be placed on remand if we gave him Tk 6,000. We couldn't give him the money as we had no money then," he added.
"Police from Uttara East called us in the morning and asked us to rush to Dhaka in a microbus, saying my father is very sick. The police personnel told us they would pay the fare once we reached there. He did not inform us about his death," Wahedul told our Bogura Correspondent.
Later in the afternoon, police from Kahalu Police Station told them Liton had died.
The son said his father was a drug addict but not a drug trader.
Ambar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kahalu Police Station, said there are two cases against Liton in the police station.
