A mobile court today jailed seven fishermen and fined 49 persons in Manikganj as they illegally caught hilsa in Jamuna river in the district's Shivalaya upazila.
Six were sentenced to 15-day imprisonment, one was sentenced to one-month jail, and 49 were fined a total of Tk 53,800, reports our local correspondent.
The judge of the mobile court and Shivalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Jasmine Sultana, confirmed the development this morning.
Jasmine Sultana said, members of Upazila Administration and Fisheries Department, along with the Naval Police, carried out a drive in the upazila last night. During the drive, 56 fishermen were detained with 50,000 metres of current net and 80kg of hilsa.
"The seized nets were destroyed and the hilsa have been distributed among local orphanages," she said.
