6 policemen withdrawn after ‘killing’ of fisherman
Four policemen of Banatibazar Naval Police Outpost have been withdrawn in connection with the death of a fisherman at Charbaliatli village in Patuakhali's Kalapara upazila.
Sub-inspector Shahidul Islam, in-charge of the outpost, confirmed it to The Daily Star yesterday.
Besides, Patuakhali district police and naval police have formed two separate probe bodies to investigate the incident.
The committees were asked to submit their reports in two days.
The withdrawn policemen are ASI Mamun-ur-Rashid, constables Sajjad, Sumon and Riaz. All of them are currently in the custody of Kalapara Police Station.
Meanwhile, after the inquest by the magistrate, the body of the slain fisherman Sujan Hawladar, 30, was sent to Patuakhali General Hospital Morgue for autopsy.
Mohammad Shahidullah, superintendent of Patuakhali police, said a three-member probe body was formed by the district police.
The team would be headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Mahfuzur Rahman, he said, adding that a separate probe body was also formed by the naval police.
A day earlier, members of Banatibazar Naval Police Outpost, led by ASI Mamun, chased the fishermen and his trawler on the Ramnabad river.
Later, Sujan was beaten by the naval police, alleged locals.
At one point, Sujan fell unconscious on the trawler net.
News spread that Sujan had died. Hundreds of agitated people, including fishermen, confined policemen with their trawler.
Unconscious Sujan was taken to Kalapara Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
