5 arrested over gang rape of teenage girl
Five people were arrested in Natore on Thursday night over the gang rape of a teenage girl.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted drives in Chhatni area of Natore Sadar upazila and arrested the five, said Monsur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar Police Station.
Police also rescued the 16-year-old victim from the same area early yesterday, he added.
In the afternoon, a Natore court sent the arrestees to jail after police produced them before it in a case filed by the victim's father.
Police said the victim, a madrasa student, went out of her house in Chhatni area around 3:30pm on Thursday as she was angry with her family members who refused to buy clothes for her.
On the way to her aunt's house, she met one Shoriful Islam, 22, who offered help to her.
Seeing Shoriful and the victim walking together, a group of criminals followed them. At one stage, the goons snatched the victim from Shoriful and took her to a lemon grove nearby. They gang-raped the girl there, said police.
The five arrestees -- Shoriful Islam, 22, Liton Hossain, 23, Noyon Sheikh, 25, Raju Hossain, 25, and Kajol Hossain, 25, -- are among the eight accused named in the case. The three others were on the run.
Liton Kuman Saha, superintendent of Natore police, said the victim underwent medical examinations at Natore Sadar Hospital.
