4 men sent to jail over rape charges

Four men were sent to jail over rape charges in two districts yesterday.

A Jashore court sent three men to jail for gang-raping an 18-year-old girl.

Md Saqib, 26, Bachchu Mia, 30, and Mahabbat Ali, 27, are all residents of Jashore Sadar upazila.

Police said the victim was acquainted with Saqib as both of them lived in the same village.

On Thursday, Saqib lured the girl to a nearby field and kept her there until dusk, when his friends showed up and gang-raped her.

Villagers found the girl in the field early yesterday morning.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recused the girl.

On the basis of the victim's complaint, police arrested three of the alleged rapists, said AKM Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury, inspector (investigation) of the Jashore Kotwali police station.

Later, the trio were produced before a court that sent them to jail, he added.

The victim filed a case against the four people; the police are trying to arrest the fourth accused.

Meanwhile, a Chattogram court sent another man to jail for raping a woman.

Gazi Md Hanif, 51, is a resident of Madhyam Goshaildanga in the city.

Police said Hanif developed a love affair over the phone with the victim, who lives in Kishoreganj.

At one stage, Hanif proposed to marry the woman and asked her to come to Chattogram.

Early hours of yesterday, the victim reached Chattogram. Then, Hanif took her to a residence and raped her there, said Sanjoy Kumar Sinha officer-in-charge (OC) of Chattogram's Bandar Police Station.

In the morning, the victim filed a rape case against Hanif. Then police arrested Hanif and produced him before a court that sent him.

The victim was sent to a hospital for medical attention.
