3 Rohingyas detained over abduction of 4 schoolboys in Cox’s Bazar

Three Rohingyas were detained on charges of suspicious involvement in connection with the abduction of four schoolboys by two Rohingya men in Cox's Bazar on Tuesday.

The detainees are Noor Salam (50) and his thirteen-year-old daughter, and Saddam Miah (35), son of Abul Kader, reports our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent.

All three are refugees of H Block, Nayapara Rohingya camp under Teknaf upazila and are relatives of Mohammad Ibrahim, who is allegedly directly involved in the kidnapping, said Mohammad Tariqul Islam, commanding officer of Armed Police Battalion (APBn)-16

Tariqul said the APBn members have been conducting raids in various possible areas, including various camps in Teknaf, since four students were held hostage demanding ransom.

This morning, the APBn detained the three Rohingyas suspecting their involvement in connection in the abduction after conducting a drive in Rohingya camp No 26 under Hnila union, said the commanding officer.

All the detainees were handed over to Teknaf Police Station after interrogation, added Mohammad Tariqul Islam, also superintendent.

Khorshed Alam, inspector (operation) of Teknaf Police Station, said law enforcers including police, Rab and APBn, continued drives to rescue the students. But the abducted students could not be rescued till filing of this report around 5pm.

According to the families of the victims, two Rohingya men, Jahangir and Ibrahim, abducted four schoolboys in Cox's Bazar after promising to take them to St Martin's Island.

The four -- Mohammad Kayser, Mizanur Rahman, Jahedul Islam and Mijanul Islam -- are students of Sonarpara High School in Ukhia upazila. Jahedul is a student of class 10 while the three others are students of class 8.

Jahangir and Ibrahim along with others abducted the four students on Tuesday telling them they would be taken to the island, their families said,  

Later, the two called the families and demanded a ransom of Tk 5 lakh for the release of each of the students.

The two Rohingyas are residents of Teknaf's Nayapara Rohingya camp number 26. They work at "Batighar cottage" on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive in Himchhari Panchardwip area, the families said.

The families also alleged that the four students knew Jahangir and Ibrahim. After abducting them, the two beat reportedly them and threatened to kill them.
