3 killed as vehicle falls into ditch
Three people, including two Chinese nationals, were killed early yesterday as a pickup truck carrying them veered off Dhaka-Kuakata highway and plunged into a ditch in Barguna's Kawabunia area.
The dead are Liwen Tao, safety officer of Shanghai Electric Power Construction Company; engineer Luziklong; and engineer Md Fakhrul Hasan from the capital's Gulshan area.
All three were staffers of an under-construction power plant in Barguna's Taltoli. They were on their way to the plant from the capital, said police.
The driver of the vehicle survived the crash.
Md Shah Alam Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Amtali Police Station, said the accident took place around 3:00am yesterday when the driver lost control over the vehicle.
On information, police went to the spot, rescued the four and took them to Amtali Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared the two Chinese nationals and Fakhrul dead.
The driver, Md Musa Mridha, was undergoing treatment there.
Aminul Islam, a resident of the area, said locals rushed to the scene after hearing that a pickup truck fell into a ditch. But they could not rescue the passengers because it was dark at that time.
About half an hour later, police arrived there and rescued the four, he added.
Contacted, Md Jahangir Mallik, superintendent of police in Barguna, said the authorities of the power plant and the Chinese embassy in Dhaka initiated the process of sending the bodies of the two Chinese nationals to their homeland.
