215 sued, 57 held over killing and vandalism at Noakhali temples
A case has been filed against over 215 people in connection with killing two people and over communal attacks on Hindu temples, idols and properties during the Durga Puja celebrations in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila following the recent incident in Cumilla.
Md Shah Imran, additional superintendent of police (Begumganj circle), confirmed the development to our Noakhali correspondent.
Ratneshawr Debnath, principal of Iskcon temple in Chowmuhoni, filed the case with Begumganj Model Police Station this noon accusing 15 named people and 180-200 unknown persons, said the additional SP.
Several allegations, including that of vandalism, looting and beating two people to death, were brought in the case, he said.
Police have detained 57 people from different parts of Noakhali till this morning suspecting their involvement in the incidents.
Attackers from a procession of several thousand people stormed into Bijoya Durga Temple on College Road in Begumganj on Friday afternoon. At one stage, the mob beat up and stabbed Jatan Kumar Saha (38), a member of the executive committee of the temple managing committee. He died in Noakhali Sadar Hospital later.
Other than that, the floating body of a youth, Pratna Das (30), was found at the pond of Iskcon temple in Chowmuhoni yesterday morning. Members of Iskcon temple alleged that Pratna was killed during Friday' attack at the temple.
