200 injured as RU students clash with locals
At least 200 students of Rajshahi University were injured in a clash with locals in Binodpur area adjacent to the university campus this evening.
Prof Sultan-ul-Islam, pro vice-chancellor of the university, confirmed to The Daily Star.
Police fired rubber bullets where at least 15-20 students were injured, claimed students.
Students were sent to the university medical centre and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with injuries also from pelting of brick chips and charging batons, the Pro-VC said.
Students said the clash ensued when some students locked into an altercation with a helper over sitting in a bus. Later, locals allegedly attacked the students.
Several motorcycles were vandalised during the clash.
Binodpur police outpost was also set ablaze at that time.
However, it could not be immediately known who set the police camp on fire.
Meanwhile, Platoon 7 of Border Guard Bangladesh has been deployed to bring the situation under control.
Chase and counter-chase between students and locals were going on till filing this report around 10:00 pm.
Talking to The Daily Star, students said Rayhan Islam, RU correspondent of Bangladesh Protidin, Mir Kadir and Jaber Ahmed, RU correspondents of separate online portals, were also among the injured.
RU proctor Prof Ashabul Haque told this newspaper that "We are trying to control the situation. Law enforcers are also working."
