2 including Turkish citizen arrested for trying to withdraw money with ATM card skimmers
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of DMP arrested two, including a Turkish national, with ATM card skimmers -- attempting to withdraw money 84 times from ATM booths recently with cloned cards.
A team of police arrested them yesterday from Gulshan-1 area along with 15 cloned cards, five phones and a laptop, CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman told a press briefing at DMP media centre today.
The arrestees are: Turkish citizen Hakan Zanburkan (55) and Mofiul Islam.
Hakan along with another Turkish national and two Bangladeshis were arrested in Indian's Assam in 2019 for embezzling around Tk 10 lakh Indian rupees through such fraudulence.
He was in jail for about 20 months and fled while being treated at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital under custody. He later went back to Turkey through Nepal, the CTTC official said.
"Hakan is one of the masterminds of an international ATM card skimming gang," he added.
CTTC officials during primary interrogation found that Hakan arrived in Bangladesh in December 31 last year and started staying at Hotel The Capital in Paltan area.
Between January 2 and 4, he went to several ATM booths of Eastern Bank Limited and tried to withdraw money 84 times -- using cloned cards of 40 countries including US, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UK, Canada, Germany and Spain, CTTC officials said.
The bank authorities, however, foiled his attempts, using anti-skimming technology.
This gang consisted nationals from Turkey, Bulgaria, Mexico, India and Bangladesh.
A case was filed with Paltan Police Station in this regard.
Eastern Bank Limited through their state of the art and robust security system together with its round the clock ATM surveillance has ensured enhanced protection of its over 200 ATM booths across the country, providing ample safety to customers transaction, the bank said in a statement.
EBL ATMs are fully protected with anti-malware, anti-skimming and enhanced firewall protection using latest operating system, which have ensured protection against malicious attacks and helped address any system vulnerabilities, it added.
