15 injured as ‘Jubo League, BCL men' attack Cumilla BNP rally
At least 15 people were injured in an attack allegedly by Jubo League and Chhatra League men on a BNP rally in Cumilla's Lalmai upazila this afternoon.
The incident took place at Gaiarbhanga bazar around 2:00pm, reports our Cumilla correspondent quoting police and locals.
Local Swechchhasebak Dal leader Monir Hossain and Jubo Dal leader Firoz were shot in head and legduring the attack, said Mafizul Islam Khandaker, member secretary of Belghar union BNP.
They were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital, he added.
Mafizul said a group of Jubo League and Chhatra League activists attacked a rally, organised by Belghar Uttar Union BNP, from their procession and opened fire on the BNP men.
A total of 15 party men, including Monir and Firoz, were injured in the attack, he said.
Later in the day, BNP central leader Monirul Haque Chowdhuryvisited the injured at Cumilla Medical College Hospital. He also condemned the attack.
Mohammad Hanif, OC of Lalmai Police Station, said no incident of firing happened. "We heard that two people were injured by brick-bats. The situation is under control now."
Lalmai upazila Chairman Kamrul Hasan, also the convener of Cumilla (south) district Jubo league, said, "We didn't attack the BNP's rally, but they attacked our peaceful procession."
