14-Party Rally: Several hurt as two BCL factions clash
Two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday clashed during a rally of the 14-party combine near the Chattogram Zilla Parishad Market over who would chant slogans.
During the rally, organised to protest attempts to create anarchy in the country, the factions got involved in a scuffle and threw chairs at each other that left four to five activists injured.
The clash erupted around 5:00pm and people at the venue started panicking. At one stage, Coordinator of 14-party in Chattogram Khorshed Alam Sujan, also the vice-president of Chattogram city Awami League, came down from the stage to restrain the Chhatra League factions, said Workers Party Chattogram district unit President Abu Hanif.
Sources said the two factions are patronised by two councillors of the city.
General Secretary of Chattogram city Chhatra League Zakaria Dastgir said, "I heard that there was a scuffle between the followers of two councillors over chanting slogans."
He claimed that no one from Chhatra League was involved.
Khorshed said a quarter deliberately attempted to disrupt the rally but the bid failed. He said the rally was held on time.
