10-truck banned MBM seized in Ctg
Chattogram customs officials and police in a joint drive last night (November 7, 2022) seized 10 trucks of fish and poultry feed containing hazardous ingredients like meat and bone meal (MBM) which is banned to import, from Anandabazar area under Badar Police Station.
According to police and customs authorities, a large number of illegal MBM was previously put near the Anandabazar Landfill for disposal but a gang was transporting the contraband out of the area in the middle of the night and sending it to an unknown destination.
Before the drive, 20 trucks of MBM managed to get out from the spot till 10:30pm, customs officials told our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Tarek Hasan, joint commissioner of Chattogram Customs told The Daily Star that customs dumped the MBM to the place to destroy as per the law but a syndicate was transporting it outside.
"Our drives are going on and we are trying to know the destination of the items. 10 trucks loaded by MBM were seized till 12am," he added.
Till filling of this report, the police and custom officials are one the spot.
The commerce ministry banned the import and sale of MBM on December 26, 2018, following a report of Bangladesh Food Safety Authority.
Such meal is banned in the US, the UK, Brazil and Canada but there is no bar on exporting it to other countries, said customs officials and importers.
