Worker killed as under-construction bridge collapses in Rangamati
A day labourer was killed and 17 others injured as an under-construction bridge of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) collapsed in Rangamati this morning.
The deceased, Md Rafiq (38), hailed from from Sunamganj district, reports our local correspondent quoting Najma Binte Amin, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Rangamati Sadar upazila.
The incident took place at Borodam under Sadar upazila, the UNO said.
The injured people are receiving treatment at Rangamati Sadar Hospital. Three of them are in critical condition, said the hospital's Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Shawkat Akbar Hossain.
When asked, Rangamati LGED unit's Executive Engineer Ahmad Shafi, said, "There was no negligence from our end. The under-construction bridge collapsed due to the negligence of the contractor. We are really sorry for this accident."
The local Jubo League leader Md Jasim Uddin was the contractor for the project, the engineer said.
But the contractor could not be reached over phone despite several attempts.
The cost of the 36-metre bridge construction is 4.75 crore.
