Worker crushed under iron sheet

A worker was crushed under an iron sheet at the Teesta Bridge construction site in Gaibandha's Sundarganj upazila yesterday.
Habibur Rahman, 50, was hit on the head by a bridge girder's shutter that fell on him as he was working at the site around 12:00pm.
He died while being taken to a hospital, said Sundarganj Police Station OC KM Azmiruzzaman.
"If the death is found to have occurred due to negligence in safety measures, a case will be filed against the authority concerned," the OC added.
The local LGED office is constructing the 1.5km bridge connecting Gaibandha's Sundarganj to Kurigram's Chilmari.
Contacted, Sundarganj Upazila Engineer (LGED) Shamsul Arefin Khan said, "We've provided necessary safety gear to the workers, but they aren't in the habit of using them.
"We'll provide adequate compensation to the deceased worker's family to ease their suffering."
In a similar accident, another worker died at the site four months ago.
