Vendor dies after auto-rickshaw hits him in Dhaka’s Chawkbazar
A man died after a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit him in Dhaka's Chawkbazar area this morning.
Deceased Morshed Alam, 40, was a roadside vegetable vendor.
The accident took place around 6:00am when Morshed was drinking tea from a road-side tea stall at Ali Ghat area, said Rajib Kumar Biswas, sub-inspector (SI) of Chawkbazar Police Station.
The SI said auto-rickshaw driver Shah Alam saw a traffic sergeant approaching him on a bike. He sped up in order to flee fearing the police officer would seize his vehicle. The driver lost control in the process and hit Morshed, leaving him critically injured.
Pedestrians took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 8:30am.
Police detained Shah Alam after the incident, the SI added.
Hailed from Cumilla, Morshed used to live in Ali Ghat area with his wife and a daughter, said victim's brother Khorshed Alam.
The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy.
