Three of a family die in Cumilla road accident

Two drivers killed in bus-truck collision in Tangail

Six people were killed in road accidents in three districts yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Cumilla, three members of a family were killed as a private car fell into a ditch beside Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Saharpar in Debidwar upazila.

Sub-inspector Premdhon Mojumder at Eliotganj Highway Police Outpost said the driver lost control over the steering amid rain and hit a roadside tree. The vehicle then overturned and fell in a ditch. The victims -- Gias Uddin Mahmud Farazi (52), his wife Jahanara Akter (48), and his sister-in-law Salma Akter Nazma (45) -- were going to Feni from Dhaka.

The bodies were handed over to the families from the police outpost.

In Tangail, the drivers of a passenger bus and a goods-laden truck were killed and 15 injured in a head-on collision between the two vehicles on Bangabandhu Bridge east link road.

Bus driver Mikail Hossain (35) from Aminbazar in Dhaka and trucker Manik Miah (25) from Harirampur in Thakurgaon died on the spot.

Jilkod Hossain, a sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, said the accident occurred in Salla area of Kalihati upazila around 5:00am. On information, a police team rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. Of the victims, eight bus passengers were admitted to Tangail General Hospital.

The accident happened as the drivers might have dozed off, he said.

Following the accident, long tailbacks were created on the both sides of the road for a few hours.
