SSC candidate run over by bus in Rampura, driver detained
A candidate of the ongoing secondary school certificate (SSC) exams was killed after an Anabil Paribahan bus ran him over near Rampura Bazar in Dhaka last night.
The deceased was identified as Md Mainuddin Islam (19), of Mollabari area in East Rampura. He was a student of Rampura Ekramunnessa High School and was taking the ongoing SSC exams, his mother Rasheda Begum told The Daily Star.
Mainuddin was the youngest among three siblings, said Rasheda.
"After having lunch yesterday, Mainuddin said his SSC exams were going well and that he wanted to study at a good college," his father Abdur Rahman Bhandari said.
"The bus hit Mainuddin around 9:50pm when he was crossing the Rampura DIT Road. He was returning home from his friend's house," Md Badshah, a relative of the victim, told The Daily Star.
Abdul Ahad, deputy commissioner (Motijheel) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DPM), told The Daily Star that the bus driver has been detained.
After learning about the death of the school student, locals went to the spot and set nine local buses, including the one that killed Mainul, on fire around 11:08pm, Ershad Hossain, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room, told The Daily Star.
"On information, four fighting units rushed to the spot to douse the blaze," added the duty officer.
The Anabil Paribahan bus hit the victim while it was overtaking a Raida Paribahan bus near Rampura Bazar, Hekmot Ali, an eyewitness told this correspondent.
