RU student killed in campus as truck runs over motorcycle
A student of Rajshahi University was killed and another injured when a truck ran over a motorcycle in front of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall inside the campus tonight.
The deceased was identified as Mahmud Habib Himel, a fourth-year student of graphic design, crafts and history of the university's arts department, reports our Rajshahi University correspondent quoting Pradip Kumar Pandey, public relation officer of the university.
The other injured -- Rimel, a fourth-year student of Ceramic and Sculpture department -- was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, a truck carrying construction materials ran over the motorcycle around 8:45pm near Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall, leaving Himel dead on the spot and critically injuring Rimel.
As the news spread, agitating students torched four vehicles including the truck and have been demonstrating at three different places in the campus protesting the incident.
A group of students took position in front of the vice-chancellor's residence while some others were demonstrating on the accident spot and around 300-400 students blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway demanding justice.
Public Relation Officer Pradip said the incident will be properly investigated and the culprits will be brought to justice.
He said, VC Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar requested "calm".
However, the body was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
RU VC Prof Sattar said they will go to the hospital.
"All construction works will remain halted now. Action would be taken against the contractor. Police are trying to nab the driver," added the VC.
