North South University student killed in ‘hit and run’ on Kuril flyover
A North South University student was killed after a suspected hit and run on the Kuril flyover in Dhaka this morning, said police.
The deceased was identified as Maisha Momotaz Meem (21), a sixth-semester student of the university's English department. Meem was heading towards the NSU campus on her scooter when the accident happened, said police.
"CCTV footage of the area showed that a covered van closely passing by Meem's scooter on the flyover. But it was not clear in the footage whether the van hit her scooter," Khilkhet Police Station Officer-in-Charge Munshi Sabbir told The Daily Star.
She was found dead on the flyover around 7:30 am, he said.
Meem was the daughter of Nur Md Mamun, a resident of Uttara Sector-6, said police.
Police are trying to identify the van and nab the driver, added OC Sabbir.
Quoting witnesses, Meem's cousin advocate Zakir Hossain told reporters that a covered van hit her scooter and at that time she had a helmet on her head. Meem bought the scooty six months ago.
He added that Meem's father Nur took her younger sister to an exam centre for medical admission test in the morning.
Nur became senseless when he heard the news about his daughter's death and now he is admitted to a hospital, Zakir Hossain said.
After an autopsy at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, the body was being taken to their ancestral home in Gazipur. She will be buried there, sources at the medical said.
