Man killed as train hits car at level crossing
A trader was killed and his car driver injured when a train hit the vehicleat an unauthorised level crossing in Gazipur's Kaliganj upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Sohel Hasib Khan, 50, a resident of Fuldi village in the same upazila, reports UNB.
Saiful Islam, sub-inspector of Kaliganj Police Station, said the accident took place in the morning when the Dhaka-bound Upakul Express from Noakhali hit the car at the level crossing in Nalchata area, leaving Sohel dead on the spot.
Police later recovered the body and handed it over to the victim's family.
Between January 1 and July 30, at least 35 people were killed in major accidents at level crossings. In late July, 11 people were killed when a train hit a microbus in Mirsharai of Chattogram.
According to statistics of the Accident Research Institute of Buet, 173 people were killed at level crossings in six years until 2021.
