Lighter vessel sinks with 500 tonnes of fertiliser in Mongla

A lighter vessel capsized in the Pashur channel of Mongla port in Bagerhat with 500 tonnes of fertiliser after a collision with another ship today.

MV Shahjalal Express sank in Harbaria area around 12:30am, our Bagerhat correspondent reports quoting Mongla Port Authority's Harbour Master Captain Mohammad Shaheen Majid.

All the eight crew, including the master, of the ship managed to swim to a nearby lighter vessel.

The propeller of the ship broke down when it collided with a Liberian-flagged MV Supreme Valor carrying clinkers.

However, operation on the channel was normal, the harbour master said.
