The container train that collided with a passenger train in Bhairab today had disregarded a signal, a Bangladesh Railway official said following the accident that left at least 15 dead and many others injured.
Nazmul Islam, acting general manager (east) of Bangladesh Railway, informed The Daily Star about their preliminary finding around 5:40pm.
He said they were now busy with rescue operations.
Another BR official said they had learned that the passenger train, Egarosindhur Express, arrived at the Bhairab Rail Station from Kishoreganj, and stopped there to change direction.
It pulled out of the station to get on the Dhaka-bound line around 3:30pm, and before the passenger train cleared the switch, the Chattogram-bound freight train rammed into the last three carriages of Egarosindhur Express.
