Five children drown in Noakhali

Five children, including two siblings and two cousins, drowned in 3 separate incidents in Noakhali, local officials said yesterday.

In Kabirhat upazila, two brothers were killed while playing with other children near a pond in Rameshpur village under the Chaprashirhat union. The deceased are Rifat, 9, a physically challenged boy, and Rifan, 7, sons of Abu Naser of Siddique Bhuiyan of the village.

The incident happened around 12:45pm and they were declared dead when brought to Kabirhat Upazila Health Complex.

In Subarnachar upazila, two cousins drowned in a pond while Eid vacationing at their natal home in Char Baishakhi village under Charwapda union.

The deceased are Riya Begum, 9, daughter of Md Hossain, and Nasrin Akhter, 11, daughter of Hossain's brother Salauddin. Charjabbar Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdul Waresh said the two sisters drowned in the pond of their house around 3:00pm, while their family members were busy with family work.

In Hatia upazila, a five-year-old girl died after drowning in a pond while playing near it in Lamtori village under the Nalchira union. The incident occurred around 9:00am.

The deceased is Niha Akter, 5, daughter of Riazuddin.

With this, eight children were killed by drowning in the district in the last three days.
