Fire near Baghabari Oil Depot destroys Sirajganj shops, houses

Several shops, residents and vehicles were gutted in a fire that broke out near Baghabari Oil Depot in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj early today.
However, no casualty was reported in the incident, said Shahed Mahamud, officer-in-charge of Shahzadpur Police Station adding that the blaze could not reach Baghabari Oil Depot.
Seven units of firefighters from Baghabari, Shahzadpur, Ullapara of Sirajganj and Bera of Pabna, brought the blaze under control around 4am after four hours of frantic attempt, reports our local correspondent quoting Md Rezaul Karim, Baghabari fire station officer.
The fire originated from vehicular parts' shop Rumi Motors near Baghabari port area around 11:45pm, the OC said.
It spread rapidly to the adjacent establishments due to gas cylinders -- kept in the shop -- exploding, he added.
There were also petrol and octane stored in the area, said Rezaul, the Baghabari fire station officer.
Seven shops, two houses, two lorries, a pick up van and a motorbike were gutted in the fire. However, the actual amount of loss could not be estimated immediately, Rezaul added.
