Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam today said they have plans to install fire hydrants in all markets and slums across Dhaka North City to enhance fire safety.

"It is essential to install fire hydrants in densely populated areas. We have taken the initial step by installing those in the Mohakhali Sattola slum. Gradually, fire hydrants will also be installed in other slums. Additionally, all necessary security measures, including fire hydrants, will be implemented in the markets under DNCC," he said.

Mayor Atiqul said these during a programme held in the capital's Mohakhali Sattola slum today.

Highlighting the Sattola slum as a model for fire safety, the DNCC mayor said the fire hydrant installed in the slum holds a capacity of 60,000 litres of water, which can ensure fire safety for a minimum of 40 minutes.

In addition to fire hydrants, residential areas require fire drills and trained volunteers who can effectively utilise the hydrants during emergencies," the mayor explained.

"We have already trained 17 individuals in the slum, and they will serve as volunteers to operate the fire hydrants. They will also train others in the community," he added.

Regarding the water supply, he mentioned, "We have ensured the availability of 60,000 litres of water, with 40,000 litres reserved for fire safety purposes and 20,000 litres allocated for household usage."

The mayor also expressed concerns over the encroachment on canal reservoirs within the city.

"Our canals and reservoirs have been illegally occupied, resulting in the water crisis," he added.
